An encounter with her changed his future. An encounter with God changed him.

People don’t set out to fail. Sometimes failure happens spectacularly with plenty of notorious attention. Other times, it comes quietly, almost with a sigh of relief. When my wife asked me for a divorce hours after my father’s funeral, only the timing was a surprise. I believed the failure of my marriage from beginning to end, along with heartache it caused, especially to my father, was unredeemable.

I was wrong.

My father was one of the finest men I ever knew. He left me a great example and a cherished legacy, one I couldn’t run from, no matter how ashamed I was to face it.

Every step I took brought more trouble, though. In those months after my father died, my uncle Nolan helped me discover I needed to make peace with a lot more than Phil Shannon’s memory. So I did what any prodigal would do.

I decided to go home.

Deciding to go is one thing. Getting there is another matter.

One of the reasons I love Paula Wiseman's stories is because she writes so real. I feel like her characters are friends of mine. What happens to them, affects me just as if it had happened to dear friends or members of my family.

This book continues the story of the Shannon family through Phil and Donna's son, Michael. Divorce, family dysfunction, fears of not living up to expectations of a parent and death of a parent are all dealt with here as well as forgiveness and mercy. Grace is shown in the relationship between Michael and his uncle. Judgmentalism pops up between brothers and even from his grandmother. Can love really save Michael? I dearly love this family and look forward to book three!

Life is hard. Second chances are rare, but oh so special when they happen. This book deals with some very tough issues in a very real way. Oftentimes in life we get advice from people who love us, who want our best, but who are still wrong. Who do we listen to? Which person is correct? This book deals with that, as well as a number of other difficult situations. In the end we see God's grace. A beautiful book.
I love Paula's books and have read every single one of them. This one really hit home for me as I was reading it and remembering the judgement, like Michel, I felt when I went through my divorce many years ago. During that time I had a friend tell me that I promised til death and that my marriage had died years before. It was like Michael feeling God's grace and love and His promise that He was taking care of everything. The way Paula relates her writing to real life and you can feel her characters' struggles within yourself and you put the down or close the book feeling like you have learned something about God and how He loves and learned something more about your relationship with Him. That's what reading Paula Wiseman's books is like and why reading EMBRACED is definitely worth every word! 5 STARS ALL THE WAY!!!!
Abuse comes in many forms. In Paula Wiseman’s first book in this series it was sexual abuse. Stacy’s and Andrea’s abuse did not leave physical scars, but they still ran deep. And Michael Shannon had to deal with both if he was to find his own way.

Paula Wiseman has a unique way of drawing the reader into the lives and emotions of the characters she is writing about. Michael had been brought up in a Christian home, but had walked away from that faith when he left for college - it was easier to follow the college culture than to follow the truth. But what he got was a mess.

But, sadly, the character I would like to have met most from this book is minor one - Uncle Nolan has a deep spirtitual life that got lost on his friends and family. It is Nolan who finally gives Michael the guidance he needs to find his way home in many ways. It would not be easy, I would mean some hard choices, but he would find his way. The best advice Nolan gave, though given to a young man experiencing a broken marriage, is of value to all of us involved with a marriage. The advice was actually two steps

Identify the five most important characteristics of your spouse.

i had two concerns as I read the book. The first was addressed, alas as an appendix - it needed to be found at the beginning of the book or at least referenced their. As I read, I often wished there was a family tree or (better) a genogram of Michaels family. I finally found it - at the very back of the ebook after all of the advertisements. It must be seen and followed as the book is read. The relationships are many and they change as the book progresses - the family tree given in the book represents the family’s status at the beginning of the book. This is where the diagram should be placed.

My second concern parallels one mentioned in my review for the first book in this series. In that first book, Donna’s husband is presented as her counselor - a violation of counselor ethics. In that first book that is a major strand of that story and effected my rating of the book. In this book Donna is shown to be cared for Dr. Craig as well, but that relationship is violated when Dr. Craig marries her following her husband’s death. In this book this is a very minor event - but does violate normal ethical practice for a doctor-patient relationship. Because this is a small, incidental event in this book, it will not effect my rating, but is worth noting.

As a friend recently mentioned, people sometimes have messy lives. Paula Wiseman had the talent of demonstrating how God can find people in their messiness and bring them to His feet. The book may be fiction, but that is also what God does in real life as well. A lesson we all must learn and appreciate.

So far - I've loved all of Paula Wisemans books - looking forward to the next one !!
This was so GOOD! It was beautiful, uplifting, healing, and encouraging. This is the first book I read by Paula Wiseman, but it will not be my last book.
Another excellent book from Paula Wiseman!
Love how she shows that the main character in this book, Michael, can find his way back to where he needs to be in life, for his son & for himself & it's never too late. Beautiful picture of grace & mercy when you call on the Lord, He'll always be there for the believers. And when we feel like we are going thru the worst thing in our lives, the Lord might actually be preparing it for the best yet to come.
Paula, having gone through the agony of divorce myself, I was so impressed with the way the subject was handled. There can be healing and lasting love and faithfulness with the help of Christ and obeying His laws. He created marriage and set the bounds by which if followed brings so many good things to us. I actually reread book one in this series to familiarize myself again with Phil and Donna. It really helped in reading the second book. I wouldn't want to hurry you but can't wait for book 3. I love your books. You are building up the kingdom of God by your writing. Thank you.
