I thoroughly enjoyed Karen Odden's second book. It was as well written and compelling as her first book. The other reviewers have described the story line so I will say that the detailed descriptions bring to life the sights, sounds, smells of England as Nell/Ed moves through the city. An unusual heroine, Nell is fascinating to read about and we alternatively root for her and are afraid for her as she displays intelligence, affection, rare courage and talent throughout the story. I enjoyed the gentle romance that Odden puts into both her books, the slow development of love, the uncertainty and the sacrifice we see from the characters. Her characters are finely written, we experience the emotions they do and are drawn into the story. The plot moves along at a good speed with no boring bits. Well worth the money and time. In fact allow yourself lots of time so you can savour the story.

A Dangerous Duet A Novel Karen Odden 9780062796967 Books Reviews

This is what I wished The Essex Serpent would be! The plot is compelling immediately and her prose paints a crystal clear image. I was transported and intrigued.
Great writing. Good story from start to finish with believable characters. The author brought the period alive while providing thoughtful insight into what I call "moral ambiguity." I hope there is another book in the works.
If you were stranded by a blizzard at a busy airport because of blizzard like conditions, wedged in between angry strangers who haven't showered since, maybe the last blizzard, and your phone is dead and all possible charging stations are overrun.....this might be an enjoyable book to read.

The main character is someone we are to believe is intelligent, brave and independant. She ends up being a slow-witted fool putting others in danger and dissapointing the readers. It obviously hit a wrong note with me.
A Dangerous Duet immediately transported me to 1870's London, introducing me to historical information, and a subculture, that I knew nothing about. We follow Nell, an intriguing heroine, through an intricately-described landscape filled with compelling characters, as she discovers a gritty underworld. I read the fast-paced story over a weekend, and found myself dreaming about the world that Odden had created. A great read, and excellent gift for teen and adult readers alike.
Props to author Karen Odden for allowing the reader to experience life in London circa 1870's. Her vivid descriptions of the sights, sounds and even smells of the time period will have feeling as if you have been transported back in time. This novel has it all...suspense, mystery, romance, music and even an international crime ring. This book was very well written and the research the author did is quite apparent. A must read!
Great storytelling! I am a history geek and my favorite teacher is a good historical fiction novel. A Dangerous Duet did not disappoint! Clearly, the author has done her research, and knows her time period and setting thoroughly. Still, she manages to steep you in her time and place without making you feel like she's beating you over the head with facts! This novel has quite a few interesting characters, all portrayed with great depth. The characters aren't portrayed as right or wrong. Rather, people make imperfect choices, but do the best they can under the circumstances. Ms. Odden's first novel, A Lady in the Smoke, is in my "to read" stack, and has jumped to the top of the pile.
I loved this book. I gravitate toward historical mysteries especially ones that the writer has researched so well. I liked that Nell is astute when meeting people not taken in like so many historical heroines. The characters were different and interesting. I must say once I started this book I couldn’t put it down. I found myself reading late into the early morning even though my eyes would close periodically, I would soldier on determined to see what would happen next. I highly recommended this book! I highly recommend this author.
